WHERE: Bar Pilar, 919 U Street NW

WHEN TO GO: Date night

WHAT TO GET: Roasted Pork Shoulder

At first glance, Bar Pilar is a classic, all-are-welcome, ‘have no fear for beer is here’ dive. Even as you step inside towards the ground floor bar a slight upturn of the nose is justifiable, but before you back out, venture up the winding stairs to the dining room.

No more than 8 to 10 tables full, this BAR is suddenly an intimate, date-worthy gem.

Located on the growing “restaurant row” that is 14th south of U Street, Bar Pilar keeps up with the newcomers with a daring small plates menu.

Be sure to curate a well-rounded tasting including a memorable chef Miller creation like the all-day roasted pork shoulder, roasted pheasant with creamy, sherry sauce, or rare duck breast accompanied by duck mouse and pickled red cabbage quinoa salad. DC “American Fare” gets quite monotonous – Pilar takes its offerings a few steps out of the box and should be hailed accordingly. Curious food makes for interesting conversation and an all the more revealing palate sharing experience—no pun intended.
