WHERE: 919 U Street NW (U Street Corridor)

WHEN TO GO: Now, before the summer rush

WHAT TO GET: Tacos

El Rey is nothing short of a much needed ray of innovation. Thank the Hilton brothers for gracing us with their talent yet again. Just in the last few years they’ve gifted us: Marvin’s, The Gibson, Brixton, Chez Billy, American Ice Co. and… shall I continue? These bros own the U Street Corridor and have little intention on slowing down.

El Rey is an empty lot turned shipping container Taquería beer garden. And it is PURE GENIUS. The ambiance is casual cool with a first come first serve self seating policy. Their short menu of tacos, tostadas, tamales, margs, sangria and beer gives “back to basics” new meaning. One of the best features is the all season beer garden–check it out before the summer rush. The industrial heat lamps will at least reassure you that Winter is not forever.

P.S. Look out for more to come from the Hilton brothers, word on the foodie street is they’re sitting on another lot on 2014 Ninth Street NW; but you didn’t hear that from me.
