In our new series, Itinerary, we do the heavy lifting of planning your perfect day. Now all you have to do is sit back, and assemble your crew.

As quickly as summer comes, it goes.

Make the best of every rooftop-worthy day in Washington, D.C. by exploring the city limits. This itinerary has you start your day in Arlington, VA and end  it in Georgetown. Whether you’re already in the Arlington area, or trecking your way there, we promise you won’t regret it.

11:00 a.m.

Start your warm, summer day with brunch and a touch of Southern charm at Tupelo Honey in Arlington. The restaurant chain was birthed in the Carolina mountains and uses locally sourced ingredients in their scratch kitchen. Hungry yet? You’ll want to start your day with their hollowed-out pineapple cocktail and famous biscuits served up with blueberry and honey.

12:00 p.m.

From Arlington, Old Town Alexandria is just a short drive or metro ride away. Right on the mighty Potomac, Old Town was named #1 Best Value U.S. Travel Destination by Money Magazine and one of the South’s Prettiest Cities by Southern Living. While you’re there, over to the historic museums, waterfront restaurants (like Blackwall Hitch), bars, and boutiques along King Street.

2:30 p.m.

After you’ve worked up an appetite walking the streets of Old Town, treat yourself to lunch on the water at the Chart House. Sit outside on their waterfront deck next to the marina and enjoy the warm summer air. I recommend starting off with their hummus trio (delicious!).

4:00 p.m.

While you enjoy your waterfront lunch, you’ll notice D.C. is just on the other side of the river. This makes visiting the animals at the Smithsonian National Zoo more than doable. Admission is free and the grounds are open until 7:00 p.m. during the summer.

7:30 p.m.

At the end the day, give your legs a rest and head on over to the Georgetown Waterfront Park for a picnic dinner and movie at Georgetown Sunset Cinema. Every year the waterfront cinema has a fun theme for their selection of movies. Films begin around 8:30 p.m., don’t be late!
